I started a straw bale garden experiment a month ago (April 4th) and planted 3 kinds of cucumbers, lima beans, marbled beans and pole beans on one side. On the other side, I planted cantaloupes, water melons and bittler melons. Some of the seedlings that I planted did not do well at all. The weather in Vegas has been kind of strange this year. For some days it went passed 95 degrees, and then dropped back down to 40’s. It was up and down a lot, coupled with a few high felocity wind days, that may explain for some of the failures. Also, something was eating the seedlings too, I think it’s the rabbits, so for the ones I replanted, I put a plastic bottle on them, and they seems to be doing better. I decided to replace one of my cucumber plants with a Japanese eggplant, and that is doing exceedingly well (3 eggplants formed on the plant). Two cucumber plants recovered, and is flowering (no fruit yet), and the squash and watermelon seems to be doing OK, and so are the potato plants in the laundry basket. I have reseeded some more cucumber plants directly in the bale and they are sprouting. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Another windy day is forecasted for tonight, huh! Will keep you all posted.
