{"id":728,"date":"2016-05-19T14:55:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-19T21:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardentowerchronicles.com\/?p=728"},"modified":"2016-05-19T14:55:00","modified_gmt":"2016-05-19T21:55:00","slug":"my-straw-bale-garden-experiment-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenmamachronicles.com\/wordpress\/my-straw-bale-garden-experiment-update\/","title":{"rendered":"My Straw Bale Garden Experiment &#8211; Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I started a straw bale garden experiment a month ago \u00a0(April 4th) and planted \u00a03 kinds of cucumbers, lima beans, marbled beans and pole beans on one side. \u00a0 On the other side, I planted cantaloupes, water melons and bittler melons. \u00a0Some of \u00a0the seedlings that I planted did not do well at all. \u00a0The weather in Vegas has been kind of strange this year. \u00a0For some days it went passed 95 degrees, and then dropped back down to 40&#8217;s. \u00a0It was up and down a lot, coupled with a few high felocity wind days, that \u00a0may explain for some of the failures. \u00a0Also, something was eating the seedlings too, I think it&#8217;s the rabbits, so for the ones I replanted, I put a plastic bottle on them, and they seems to be doing better. \u00a0I decided to replace one of my cucumber plants with a Japanese eggplant, and that is doing exceedingly well (3 eggplants formed on the plant). \u00a0Two cucumber plants recovered, and is flowering (no fruit yet), and the squash and watermelon seems to be doing OK, and so are the potato plants in the laundry basket. \u00a0I have reseeded some more cucumber plants directly in the bale and they are sprouting. \u00a0I am keeping my fingers crossed. \u00a0Another windy day is forecasted for tonight, huh!
